It's easier to read who's standing in front of you that way. At least, you have a few clues to hang on to when you try to figure the person out. And I won't buy the crap that appearance should not be a variable in trying to figure people out: if someone wears specific types of clothes, tattoos, punk hairstyles, and so on, they're definitely trying to say something.
